Angara files resolutions honoring arnis team, Majority Leader Zubiri
The Senate on Monday honored the Philippine National Arnis Team (PNAT) for its sterling performance in the ongoing 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Sen. Sonny Angara filed the Senate Resolution 247 recognizing the historic feat of the PNAT, which further solidified the Philippines’s mastery of the sport and the martial arts discipline.

The PNAT delivered 14 gold, four silver and two bronze medals for the Philippines, for a total of 20 medals. The gold-medal haul of the PNAT represents 10 percent of the total gold-medal tally of the Philippine contingent in the SEA Games.

A separate resolution, PSR 248, was also filed by Angara to recognize the contributions of Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri to the PNAT and to arnis as a sport.

“We congratulate our Philippine National Arnis Team for bringing honor and glory to the country. It is only fitting that they delivered the most gold medals for the Philippines, considering that arnis is the national martial art and sport of the Philippines,” Angara said.
“Under the stewardship of the Philippine Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation [PEKAF] President and Chairman Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri, the PNAT has demonstrated how Filipino athletes can excel against international competition. After 14 years of being absent from the SEA Games, arnis is back and hopefully it is here to stay,” Angara added.

“The overwhelming success of the PNAT at the 30th SEA Games is an inspiring testament to the level of excellence that Filipino athletes can achieve, with proper government support,” the resolution stated.

Zubiri was credited for his efforts to strengthen and preserve the practice of arnis as a martial art and sport.
As president and chairman of PEKAF, Zubiri hosted regional competitions and training camps “to push our arnisadors to excellence in preparation for international competitions.”

“The performance of the Philippine Team for arnis has been a success, not only in its bountiful harvest of medals, but also in its effectiveness in inspiring appreciation and interest in arnis among Philippine and international audiences alike,” the resolution stated

Philippine Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (Pekaf) President Juan Miguel Zubiri is confident that the Philippine arnis team competing in next year’s Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) will achieve its goals.
In fact, Zubiri, who is in Cebu for a meeting with Pekaf board members, said he will step down as president of Pekaf if the team will not deliver at least 15 gold medals and emerge overall champion in the biennial meet that the Philippines will be hosting.
“If we will not emerge as overall champion in arnis in the Sea Games, I will resign as the president of Pekaf,” Zubiri said during the board meeting yesterday at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
“I am output oriented. I want to walk the talk. If I cannot deliver, I will resign as their chairman and president. That’s also putting pressure on them (Pekaf officers) that they have to deliver. All of them are the leaders of the biggest arnis clubs in the country. We are targeting 15 gold medals at least,” said Zubiri, the author of the Republic Act 9850 or the Arnis Law which declared the authentic Filipino martial arts as the Philippines national martial art and sport.
Arnis, which replaces pencak silat in next year’s Sea Games, has 20 events worth one gold medal each.
The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) already gave its full support to Pekaf, the national sports association for arnis.
Meanwhile, Zubiri also feted the Cebuano gold medalists in last month’s World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (Wekaf) World Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii. They are Jeffrey Navarrete (2 golds, 3 silvers, 4 bronze), Crysthil Mae Gumajin (1-6-1), Oswen Kenret Bautista (6-2-0), Dexler Bolambao (7-2-0), Mary Joyce Dabalos (5-2-1), Steven Atenta (2-1-2), and Trixie Mary Lofranco (2-2-2).
Team Philippines finished second overall in Wekaf world championships last July with a 39-24-32 (gold-silver-bronze) tally while the United States topped the competition with a 101-79-80 haul.
The gold medalists in the World Championships may don the colors of the Philippines in the Sea Games as they are already part of the national training pool for arnis.
To give them more exposure, Zubiri is planning to stage an Asian championships next year, where he will be inviting teams from China, Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries to compete.
The venue could either be in Cebu or in Manila.
